Resume Writing Cost: Price a Clear Freelance Writing Package
Buying a resume is buying a defined writing process—not a promise that someone else can make an employer say yes.

Resume-writing quote = consultation, research, drafting and revision hours × chosen hourly rate + agreed external costs. Price cover letters and profile work separately unless the package expressly includes them.
What should a resume writing service cost?
A useful resume-writing price starts with what the writer will actually do. Is the service a light edit, a complete rewrite, a career-change interview or a resume plus cover letter? In our illustrative full-rewrite example, six hours at an assumed $60 hourly rate produce a $360 fee. That is not a national average, a recommendation for every writer or a claim about what any named provider charges. It shows how a defined package can be priced transparently.
For a buyer, the real question is whether the service matches the problem. Someone with a clear work history and a finished draft may need a careful edit. Someone changing fields may need help identifying relevant achievements and explaining transferable experience. A more expensive package is not automatically better; a cheap service is not automatically unsuitable. Ask which conversations, documents and revisions are included before comparing prices.
For freelancers, career writing is a distinct service from general copywriting or proofreading. You must gather accurate evidence, organize a professional history and adapt it to an agreed role. The client still owns the truth of their qualifications. This guide helps both sides describe that scope, without pretending a writer can guarantee interviews or a job.
Build a clear quote in five steps
- 01
Identify the target role
Agree the role type, career stage and purpose. Request a current resume and one or two relevant job descriptions instead of targeting every possible job.
- 02
Scope the consultation and source material
Confirm the interview length, supplied career history and evidence needed for achievements. Do not invent employers, qualifications or performance results.
- 03
Separate included documents
Specify resume, cover letter and profile deliverables individually. Define formats and whether multiple job-targeted versions are included.
- 04
Allow bounded review time
Set a clear deadline for client corrections and consolidated feedback. Distinguish factual fixes from a request to target a new role.
- 05
Confirm terms and delivery
Agree price, milestones, confidentiality expectations and review limits. Describe the service without guaranteeing a hiring outcome.
Example: a six-hour resume rewrite at $60/hour
All hours and the rate below are hypothetical USD planning assumptions, not survey data. The package covers one target role and one consolidated revision round.
| Item | Estimate | Assumption |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery conversation | 1 hour | Career history and target role |
| Research and evidence organization | 1 hour | Client-supplied achievements |
| Draft and structure | 2.5 hours | One resume, no cover letter |
| Review, revisions and delivery | 1.5 hours | Editable document and PDF |
| Illustrative package price | $360 | 6 hours × assumed $60/hour |
Compare resume services by what is included
These are scope categories, not verified market-price bands.
| Service | Input condition | Typical scope question | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Editing | Existing complete draft | How much rewriting is included? | Not a new career narrative |
| Full rewrite | Career history available | Is a consultation included? | One agreed role target |
| Career-change package | Evidence needs organizing | How is transferable experience explored? | No invented qualifications |
| Resume plus add-ons | Multiple documents wanted | Which letters/profiles are included? | No automatic unlimited versions |
Avoid unclear claims before paying or quoting
A good agreement leaves room for judgment without hiding the deliverables.
- !A job or interview is presented as certain
- !A supposed recruiter requires an unexplained resume-format payment
- !Nobody explains who writes the document
- !Extra role versions have no price boundary
- !Credentials or achievement numbers are invented
- !“ATS optimized” has no clear meaning
Consultation and evidence gathering change the workload
A strong draft depends on the material behind it. The writer may need to ask how a project worked, what responsibility the client held and which results can be supported. CareerOneStop recommends making qualifications easy to find and tailoring relevant information to the job. It does not set freelancer prices. The consultation in our example is an explicit task, not a disguised promise to discover a perfect formula.
When material is missing, agree who will supply it and when. Ask the client to distinguish a measured result from a rough recollection. If a number cannot be supported, use a truthful description rather than an impressive invented statistic. A career-change brief may need more exploration than a straightforward update; quote that work rather than quietly treating it as unlimited intake.
ATS wording is not a guarantee of passing every employer system
Applicant tracking systems differ, as do employer workflows. CareerOneStop offers practical resume guidance on readable formatting, relevant keywords and highlighting qualifications. Those choices can improve clarity, but they do not establish that any particular service will pass every automated screen or produce an interview. Avoid selling a single “ATS score” as if it is an employer’s hiring decision.
Ask a writer what their formatting and keyword work actually includes. A reasonable answer might describe an editable document, straightforward headings and role-relevant wording supported by your experience. Keyword stuffing or copying qualifications you do not hold undermines the purpose. Keep the resume readable for a person as well as suitable for the application requirements supplied by the employer.
Review guarantees and recruiter payment requests carefully
The FTC warns about job scams that demand payment for resume reformatting after a supposed recruiter says a document is incompatible. It also advises researching firms offering paid resume or recruiting services. That does not mean every paid resume writer is a scam. It means you should check the business, understand the service and be cautious when a hiring opportunity becomes a reason to collect an unexplained fee.
If a package advertises an interview guarantee, read the conditions. It may offer a rewrite, require a certain number of applications or apply only during a defined period. A service policy is not proof that the writer controls hiring. Compare what happens if you are unhappy with the document, and get the refund or revision terms in writing rather than relying on a headline.
Protect personal information and define the handoff
Discuss what information the writer needs, who can access it and how drafts are shared. A writing project generally does not require bank details or account passwords. Provide relevant career evidence without sending unnecessary sensitive material. These are practical project boundaries, not a claim that this article certifies a provider’s security or privacy compliance.
Name the final formats and review window. An editable document lets the client update their history; a PDF is a separate export. A request to target a different occupation after approval can become a new assignment. Keep factual corrections distinct from new positioning work, and do not add a cover letter or online-profile rewrite merely because the package name sounded broad.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I pay for resume writing?
Compare the actual scope and writer involvement. Our six-hour rewrite example is $360 at an assumed $60/hour; it is not a verified average or a universal fair price.
Is a cover letter included in resume writing cost?
Only if the package says so. Ask whether it is one targeted letter, a reusable outline or a separately priced document.
Can a resume writer guarantee a job?
A writer cannot control an employer’s decision. Read any advertised guarantee as a service policy with conditions, not certainty of employment.
Does ATS optimization guarantee an interview?
No. Relevant truthful wording and readable formatting help explain your qualifications, but systems and employer requirements differ.
Should a career-change resume cost more?
It may require more consultation and evidence organization. Price the extra work rather than applying an automatic premium to every career changer.
How many revisions are included?
Use the agreed package terms. Our example includes one consolidated round for the same target role, not unlimited new versions.
Should I pay a recruiter to reformat my resume?
Be cautious. The FTC warns about this scam pattern. Verify the recruiter and opportunity independently before paying unexplained compatibility fees.
