Freelance App Development Cost: Quote a Defined MVP

An hourly rate is only one input. The real budget depends on the features, platforms and release responsibilities you agree before coding starts.

App labor budget = (discovery + implementation + testing + release hours) × chosen hourly rate. Add approved external costs separately; do not include the same expense twice.

Freelance App Development Cost: where to start

To estimate freelance app development cost, multiply the hours for each agreed stage by your chosen billing rate, then add approved external costs. A hypothetical 100-hour project at $80 per hour costs $8,000 in labor. That number is a worked example, not an average app price or a promise that every MVP takes 100 hours. Discovery, testing and release preparation belong in the estimate alongside implementation.

A minimum viable product is a deliberately limited first version, not a synonym for a cheap app. A booking request form is different from real-time availability, payment processing and automatic calendar synchronization. A client can describe all three as “a simple booking app,” but each creates different dependencies. The most useful first conversation is about what a user can actually do at launch.

Our mobile-developer calculator helps you check an hourly floor. This article answers a different question: how that rate becomes a project budget for a named feature set. It focuses on a single-platform service-business MVP and the work surrounding delivery, rather than repeating an hourly-rate benchmark or a general web-development guide.

Build a clear quote in five steps

  1. 01

    Choose the first user journey

Write one complete journey, from opening the app to completing its main task. Mark features that are explicitly excluded. Ask who provides content, designs, credentials and test data.

  2. 02

    Name platforms and dependencies

Specify iOS, Android or both, supported OS versions, the backend and external integrations. A shared codebase does not remove the need to test each platform.

  3. 03

    Estimate stages separately

Budget discovery, implementation, integration, testing, fixes and release preparation. Identify uncertain work before promising a fixed price. A paid discovery phase can resolve a poorly defined integration.

  4. 04

    Agree acceptance and release duties

List test cases, supported devices, client review time and who controls developer accounts. Specify submission assistance without guaranteeing store approval or a particular review date.

  5. 05

    Separate ongoing support

Offer a defined maintenance agreement only if needed. Name covered work, response expectations and hours. New features and third-party subscription bills should not disappear into an undefined support promise.

Worked example with explicit assumptions

All labor rates and hours are hypothetical planning inputs, not user data or national averages. External costs and applicable taxes are separate.

Compare pricing approaches and scope

Compare the deliverables as carefully as the price.

Resolve these issues before quoting

Clarify the brief before committing to a total.

  • !Inputs or content are not ready
  • !Client review has no owner
  • !The supported environment is undefined
  • !Testing and handoff are omitted
  • !New work is assumed to be free
  • !External costs have no agreed payer

Why hourly and fixed-price quotes are not interchangeable

An hourly arrangement lets the client buy effort against an agreed scope and reporting process. A fixed-price arrangement puts more estimation risk on the freelancer. Neither option makes uncertain requirements disappear. If a third-party system is undocumented or the existing code cannot be inspected, treat that uncertainty as a discovery task rather than burying it in a confident total.

For a fixed quote, list milestones that can be checked: accepted specification, testable build and agreed handoff. A client should be able to tell what has been delivered at each stage. If you choose a contingency, explain its purpose and whether it is included in the price or a separately authorized budget. There is no universal contingency percentage in this example.

A closer look at the $8,000 example

The hypothetical app lets a customer create an account, browse a fixed service catalog, send a booking request and view its status. It includes one backend integration, a named device list, one acceptance round and submission assistance. It excludes online payments, chat, analytics and ongoing maintenance. Those boundaries make the arithmetic meaningful: the example is not a quote for an entire service marketplace.

Now suppose the client adds automatic calendar booking. You may need availability queries, collision handling, permissions and more tests. Estimate the changed tasks and request approval before proceeding. Do not simply charge for one extra screen if the screen introduces a new workflow. Your change note should show what changes, the price effect and any revised dates.

Store costs and launch responsibilities

Google documents a US$25 one-time Play Console registration fee. That is an account cost, not a payment for a developer to build the app. Apple and Google maintain their own enrollment, testing and review requirements. Confirm the current terms for the client’s account and region, and agree who pays platform costs. Do not put an unverified Apple enrollment amount into the quote.

Release preparation may include screenshots, descriptions, privacy disclosures, build signing and resolving submission feedback. Agree who supplies policy wording and who owns the developer account. Testing and account verification can affect timing even when coding is finished. Submission assistance should not be described as guaranteed approval; the store makes that decision.

What to budget after the first release

Hosting, monitoring, external APIs and supported OS changes can create continuing work or bills. Separate a predictable service bill from labor required to investigate a fault. A client should see which costs recur monthly, which are usage-based and which arise only when work is requested. Avoid claiming maintenance always costs a fixed percentage of the original build.

A useful handoff includes access ownership, deployment notes, backup responsibilities and a short list of known limitations. Define a correction period for work that does not meet the accepted brief, separately from enhancement requests. Review the real project hours afterward so your next estimate improves. The objective is an explainable budget, not a misleadingly precise universal app price.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a freelance app developer cost for an MVP?

There is no single price for every MVP. The stated 100-hour, $80/hour example costs $8,000 in labor. Use your actual feature list, effort estimate and agreed rate.

Is an app developer hourly rate enough to estimate a project?

No. You also need estimated hours for discovery, coding, integration, testing and release tasks. Two developers with the same rate can quote different scopes.

Does a cross-platform app cost the same as one platform?

Not necessarily. Shared code can reduce duplicated implementation, but each platform still needs appropriate testing and release work.

Should app store fees be included in the developer quote?

List them separately or explicitly state they are included. Google currently documents a $25 one-time account fee; check current account terms before purchasing.

Can I guarantee a store approval date?

No. You can agree your submission tasks and target dates, but the store controls review and approval.

How should I price an uncertain integration?

Inspect the documentation and access first. Consider a paid discovery phase before agreeing a fixed implementation price.

Is ongoing maintenance part of the MVP price?

Only if the agreement says so. Define covered support, duration and exclusions rather than assuming all future work is included.
